An anagram is a strange kind of puzzle. The answer is already in front of you — every letter, nothing missing, nothing added — and yet your brain refuses to see it. Then somebody says "it's a fruit" and it snaps into place in under a second. That gap between having the information and seeing it is the whole game.
This version runs on one phone and gets out of your way. Tap the loose tiles to fill the blanks, and a correct word locks itself in — there is no submit button to hunt for while the clock runs down. Get it wrong and the board shakes, hands the last letter back, and lets you carry on without any ceremony.
The 1,300+ words are split across 16 categories and three difficulty bands, so a four-letter animal and an eleven-letter branch of science are never in the same bucket unless you asked for both. Points scale with difficulty, which means an easy category is not a shortcut to winning — it is just a shortcut to fewer points.

What you need
- One phone, passed around the group
- 2 to 20 players — or two teams for relay mode
- About 10 minutes
- Nothing to write on, nothing to print
How to play Word Scramble
Pick your players, then choose the categories and difficulty. Everyone can play solo for their own points, or split into two teams for 60-second relay sprints.
The phone shows a word with its letters jumbled. Tap the loose tiles to drop them into the empty slots and spell the real word.
Get it right and the word locks in by itself — no submit button. Get it wrong and the board shakes, hands you the last letter back and lets you keep going.
Easy words are 1 point, medium 2, hard 3. Solve one in under half your time and take a bonus point on top.
Stuck? The 💡 button reveals the hint for −1, and a second tap reveals the first letter for another −1. Skipping costs nothing but the clock.
After your stint the recap lists every word — tap any of them to fix a mis-call, argue the speed bonus, or wipe a hint charge.
Highest score when everyone has had a turn wins. A tie goes to sudden death: one more word each for whoever is level.
Scoring and winning
- Easy words are worth 1 point, medium 2 and hard 3.
- Solve a word in under half your allotted time for a bonus point.
- The first hint reveals the clue for −1. A second hint reveals the first letter and the length for another −1. A word can never score below zero.
- Skipping costs nothing but the seconds you already spent, and a word you never reached is simply worth nothing.
- The recap after each stint lets you change any result, argue the speed bonus, or wipe a hint charge before the phone moves on.
- Highest total after everyone has had a turn wins. A tie goes to sudden death: one more word each for whoever is level.
Word Scramble strategy and tips
- Look for the vowels first and count them. Two vowels in a seven-letter word tells you far more about the shape of the answer than any single consonant does.
- Pull common endings out as a block. Spotting ING, TION, ED or ER as a unit turns a seven-letter problem into a three-letter one.
- Use the Mix button, not your eyes. Re-shuffling the loose tiles physically breaks the wrong arrangement your brain has locked onto, and it costs nothing.
- Read the category before the letters. "Dubai Life" and "Science" send you looking in completely different parts of your vocabulary, and the category is free.
- Take the first hint early on a hard word rather than late. A point spent with forty seconds left often buys three; the same point spent with five seconds left buys nothing.
- In relay mode, skip anything that does not land in about five seconds. A sprint rewards volume, and one heroic ten-letter solve is worth less than three quick ones.
Variants and house rules
Team relay
Two teams, 60 seconds each, as many words as you can clear. Built in — pick it on the setup screen and the app splits the room for you.
Category duel
Each player picks the category for the player after them. Petty, effective, and it stops anyone hiding in the easy decks.
No hints allowed
House rule: the 💡 button is off limits. Hard difficulty with no hints is a genuinely different game and a very quiet one.
Speed only
Ignore difficulty points entirely and count solves. Set 30 seconds a word and eight words each — first to the most words wins.
Spectator rules
Everyone else may shout letters but never the answer. Surprisingly hard to obey, and it makes a two-player game work as a party game.
Word Scramble FAQ
How do you play Word Scramble?
You are shown the letters of a hidden word in a jumbled order. Tap the tiles to spell the real word before your timer runs out. A correct arrangement locks in automatically, and points depend on the word's difficulty.
How many players do you need?
Two is enough, and it scales to twenty. Team relay needs at least four so both teams have someone to shout at.
Do hints cost points?
Yes — one point each, and there are two per word. The first gives you the clue, the second gives you the first letter and the word length. A word can still never score less than zero.
What happens if I guess the wrong word?
The board shakes, the last letter you placed comes back to the tray, and you keep playing. There is no penalty for a wrong attempt beyond the time it cost you.
Can I choose which categories come up?
Yes. The setup screen lists all 16 categories with the number of words in each, and you can select any combination. Difficulty is a separate filter on top.
What happens if my phone locks mid-game?
Nothing is lost. The game saves itself as you play, and the setup screen offers to resume you at the top of the word you were on, with everything already scored still intact.
