Higher or Lower is a comparison game for 2–20 players in which two things from the same category are shown, one with its real statistic and one hidden, and players call whether the hidden number is higher or lower than the one they can see.

Higher or Lower is the game your brain plays badly on purpose. Everyone knows roughly how big Egypt is and roughly how long a horse lives, and everyone is confidently, spectacularly wrong the moment the two numbers get close.
The library behind it is 267 real figures across six categories — country populations, country land area, building and tower heights, river lengths, animal lifespans and animal top speeds. Pairs are drawn so the two values are never equal, so there is always a right answer, and the same pair never comes up twice in a session or in the session after it.
There are two ways to play. Streak passes the phone round: you keep answering until you get one wrong, and your longest single run is what counts. Versus keeps everyone in every prompt — the room shouts, whoever holds the phone taps the people who said higher, and the reveal rolls the real number up while somebody explains why they were technically right.

How to play Higher or Lower
Pick your players, choose the stat categories you want in the mix, and pick a mode: Streak (one player at a time) or Versus (everyone calls every prompt).
Each prompt shows two things from the same category. The top one comes with its real number; the bottom one is hidden behind a question mark.
The only question is whether the hidden number is higher or lower than the one you can see. Equal values never come up, so there is always a right answer.
In Streak mode the phone passes round. You keep answering until you get one wrong, and your longest single run is your score. No idea? Skipping is free and does not break the streak.
In Versus mode everyone shouts at once, then whoever holds the phone taps the people who said higher and reveals. Every correct call is a point.
The reveal rolls the real number up and shows the note behind it, so you learn something even when you lose.
After each turn or prompt, tap anyone in the recap to flip their call if they were tapped into the wrong column. Highest score at the end wins, and ties go to a tie-break round.
Scoring and winning
- In Streak mode your score is your longest single run of correct answers, not your total. Three turns each is the default, and only your best run counts.
- A wrong answer ends your turn immediately and passes the phone on.
- Skipping a pair is free in Streak mode and does not break the run — use it when you have genuinely never heard of either thing.
- In Versus mode every correct call is one point, and anyone the phone holder does not tap is recorded as having said lower.
- Every recap is editable: tap a player to flip which way they called it, and the points move with them.
- Highest score wins, with total correct answers as the tie-break, and a genuine tie gets an extra round.
Higher or Lower strategy and tips
- Anchor on the number you can see rather than the thing being named. The question is never "how big is Chad", it is "is Chad bigger than the 1.28 million on screen".
- Populations cluster hard. Most countries you have heard of sit between 5 and 60 million, so when the visible number is inside that band, the coin is genuinely fair and you should not overthink it.
- Animal lifespans run longer than instinct says. Parrots, tortoises and large whales all beat almost any guess a person makes cold.
- For buildings, remember that anything built after 2010 in the Gulf or East Asia is taller than it looks in your memory. Older icons — the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building — are the ones people overrate.
- In Streak mode, a skip is worth using at three or four correct. You have something to protect by then, and the run is the only thing being scored.
- In Versus mode, call it out loud before the phone holder starts tapping. The whole game rests on nobody being allowed to change their mind during the reveal.
Variants and house rules
Single category
Turn off everything except one category in setup. A pure land-area session is much harder than a mixed one, because you lose the ability to guess from the type of number on screen.
Sudden death
Set turns to 1 and play Streak. Everyone gets exactly one run, one mistake ends it, and the whole game is over in about four minutes.
Say the number
House rule for Versus: before the reveal, one player has to name a figure as well as a direction. If they are within ten per cent, they take two points instead of one.
Teams
Split into two halves and alternate turns in Streak mode. A team’s score is its best run, so the pressure lands on whoever goes last.
Learning mode
Play Versus with the notes read out loud on every reveal. It stops being a party game and becomes a surprisingly effective way to remember which river is longer.

Can the two values ever be equal?
No. Pairs with identical values are filtered out before they reach the screen, so every prompt has a right answer.
Does the same pair come up twice?
Not in a session, and not in the next one either — the app remembers which pairings a device has already seen and works through the fresh ones first.
How many players is it best with?
Streak mode is sharpest with three to six. Versus mode holds a room of twenty, because nobody is ever waiting for a turn.
What happens if somebody is tapped into the wrong column?
Tap them again in the recap. Their call flips and the point moves with it, before or after the reveal.
