A riddle is a question that punishes you for answering it literally. It is also the oldest party game there is, and it needs nothing but a room and one person willing to read out loud. The only thing that has ever been hard about riddles is finding six hundred of them without accidentally reading the answer first.

That is what this is. The phone holds the riddle, the room shouts, and the answer stays hidden until somebody taps to reveal it. Every riddle is priced by how hard it is: an easy one is worth a point, a hard one is worth three. The hint is always there, and it always costs you one, which turns every stuck moment into an actual decision rather than a slow death.

Two ways to run it. Free-for-all is the loud one — everybody sees the riddle, first correct shout takes it, and the phone just keeps score. Hot seat is the tense one — each player gets a riddle of their own and a clock, and the rest of the room has to sit on their hands and watch someone they love slowly fail to think of the word 'candle'.

What you need

  • One phone, passed around or held by whoever reads best
  • 2 to 20 players, or one person and a long car journey
  • Twenty minutes and a willingness to groan
  • Nobody googling. This is the entire social contract

How to play Riddle Rush

  1. Pick your players, then choose a mode. Free-for-all: everyone sees the riddle and shouts. Hot seat: each player gets their own riddle and their own clock.

  2. Whoever is holding the phone reads the riddle out loud. Nobody scribbles, nobody googles — this is a talking game.

  3. A riddle is worth its difficulty: 1 point for easy, 2 for medium, 3 for hard. The card tells you what it is worth before anyone answers.

  4. Stuck? Tap "Hint" for the nudge. It costs one point off that riddle, which is exactly the trade it should be.

  5. Tap "Reveal the answer" when someone lands it or the room gives up. In free-for-all you then tap whoever got there first; in hot seat it is a straight Cracked it or Nope.

  6. Skipping is free and does not use up one of your riddles, so a reference nobody knows costs the group nothing but a groan.

  7. Mis-tapped? Undo takes back the last call instantly, and "Scores & fixes" lets you re-award any riddle you have played. Most points at the end takes the crown — a tie goes to sudden death.

Scoring and winning

  • Each riddle is worth its difficulty: easy 1 point, medium 2, hard 3. The card shows the value before anyone answers.
  • Taking the hint costs one point off that riddle. An easy riddle solved with a hint is worth nothing but the satisfaction.
  • Skipping is free and does not use up one of your riddles, so an unfair one costs the group only a groan.
  • In free-for-all the phone-holder taps whoever shouted it first, or "Nobody got it". In hot seat it is a straight Cracked it or Nope.
  • Undo takes back the last call with one tap, and "Scores & fixes" lets you re-award any riddle you have already played.
  • Most points at the end wins. A tie goes to sudden death: one more riddle, first correct answer takes it.

Riddle Rush strategy and tips

  • Read the riddle twice before anyone answers. Half of all riddles hide the answer in a word you skimmed past the first time.
  • When you are stuck, list what the answer is not. "It has a face but no eyes" rules out every living thing in about four seconds, and that is most of the work.
  • Take the hint early rather than late. A hard riddle solved with a hint is still worth two points; a hard riddle nobody solves is worth zero to everybody.
  • In free-for-all, shout partial answers. "Something you break?" gets the room moving, and the phone-holder can only award a point to someone who actually says a word.
  • Play hot seat with a short clock if your group has one person who answers everything. Thirty seconds each is a great equaliser.
  • The old riddles are old because they work. If your group has heard "what has keys but opens no locks", let them have it and enjoy the two seconds of smugness — the pool runs to hundreds and it will not repeat.

Variants and house rules

Hot seat

Built in. Each player faces their own riddle on their own clock while everyone else stays silent. Harder than it sounds, and much funnier to watch.

Team riddles

Split into two teams and alternate. Only the team on the clock may answer; if they miss it, the other team gets one free steal attempt for a single point.

No hints, double points

House rule for a group that thinks it is clever. Disable the hint by agreement and double every value. It gets humbling around the third hard riddle.

Riddle chain

Whoever solves a riddle reads the next one out loud. It keeps the phone moving and stops one person becoming the permanent quizmaster.

Solo brain gym

One player, endless mode, hard only. Track how many you crack before the first hint. It is a very good way to lose forty minutes.

Riddle Rush FAQ

How do you play riddles as a party game?

One person reads a riddle out loud to the group and everyone tries to solve it. The first correct answer scores. In Riddle Rush the phone holds 600+ riddles, hides the answer until you reveal it, and keeps score, so the reader can play too.

What is a good riddle for adults?

The best adult riddles are the ones with a single misleading word: "What can travel around the world while staying in one corner?" A stamp. They reward careful listening rather than trivia knowledge, which is why they work on any group.

How many riddles are in the game?

Over 600, split across easy, medium and hard, with a hint written for every single one. The app remembers what your group has already seen, so a new session does not hand you the same riddles again.

Does using a hint lose you points?

Yes — one point off that riddle. A hard riddle drops from three points to two, and an easy one drops to nothing. That is the trade, and deciding whether to take it is most of the game.

Can you play riddles with kids?

Yes. Set the spice level to Family in Settings and pick Easy difficulty, and the pool becomes riddles a ten-year-old can win. Mixed-age groups do well on Any difficulty with adults on hard mode by agreement.

What happens if nobody can solve it?

Tap "Reveal the answer" and then "Nobody got it". Nobody scores and you move on. You can also skip a riddle before revealing it, which costs nothing and does not use up one of your rounds.
