Imposter — rules, strategy, and how to play

Imposter is the fastest social deduction game to teach and the hardest to stop playing. Everyone sits in a circle, everyone secretly reads the same word off one phone — everyone, that is, except the imposter. Then you go around saying a single word about your word, and try to work out who is bluffing from nothing but vocabulary and body language.

What makes it vicious is the double bind on every honest player. Say something too specific and the imposter now knows the word and can blend in for the rest of the round. Say something too vague to be useful and you look exactly like the person who does not know the word. There is no safe clue, only a good one.

This version deals from a library of 5,000+ word pairs across 38 themed categories, and tracks what your group has already seen so a word will not come up again until the category is exhausted. Play it on one phone — no accounts, no second device, no setup beyond typing names.

What you need

  • One phone, passed around the circle
  • 3 to 15 players sitting where everyone can hear each other
  • About 15 minutes for a few rounds
  • Nothing else — no cards, no pens, no second device

How to play Imposter

  1. Everyone secretly gets the same word — except the imposter(s). In Undercover mode they get a sneaky look-alike word; in Classic mode they just see "You are the Imposter".

  2. Pass the phone around the circle. Press and hold to peek at your card — then keep that poker face on.

  3. In speaking order, each player says ONE word related to the secret word. Too obvious and you feed the imposter; too vague and everyone side-eyes YOU.

  4. Discuss between clue rounds. When the group smells a rat, call a vote and tap the suspect. A tie forces a revote between the tied players.

  5. Caught an imposter? They get ONE guess at the real word from 6 options — nail it and they steal the win.

  6. Scoring: civilians +2 each for catching an imposter, imposters +3 for surviving the vote, +2 for a word steal.

  7. With 2+ imposters they do NOT know each other — unless you switch on Allies in Classic mode. Delicious chaos.

  8. Keep dealing rounds — fresh word, reshuffled imposters — then crown your champion on the podium. 🏆

Scoring and winning

  • Civilians score +2 each when the group votes out an imposter.
  • An imposter scores +3 for surviving the vote — and any other imposters still score +3 even if one of them gets caught.
  • A caught imposter gets one guess at the real word from six options. Guess right and they steal the round for +2, and the civilians score nothing.
  • Scores carry across rounds, so a champion is crowned on the podium after however many rounds you feel like playing.

Imposter strategy and tips

  • As a civilian, aim your clue one step sideways rather than one step closer. For "Beach", say "sandals" rather than "sand" — it proves you know the word without handing it over.
  • Never repeat the flavour of the clue before yours. Two people saying near-identical words is how an imposter hides in the middle of the pack.
  • As the imposter in Undercover mode you hold a look-alike word, so play the overlap. If you have "Lake" and the real word is "Beach", words like "water" and "towel" are true for both.
  • Listen for who goes late and safe. An imposter usually waits, then produces a clue that could have followed anything already said.
  • Position matters more than people expect. Going first is dangerous for an imposter and going last is suspicious — call a vote on someone who conveniently always speaks fourth.
  • If you are caught, slow down before the six-option guess. The decoy word is deliberately excluded from that grid, so eliminate the options that feel too far from what the group described.

Variants and house rules

Classic mode

The imposter is simply told "You are the Imposter" and gets no word at all. Harder for the imposter, faster for everyone else, and the better mode for a first game.

Undercover mode

The imposter gets a closely related decoy word and may not immediately realise they are the imposter. This produces the best accidental bluffs in the game.

Two or more imposters

The app suggests roughly one imposter per five players. By default multiple imposters do not know each other, which means they can and will vote each other out. Switch on Allies in Classic mode if you want them working together.

Clue timer

Turn on a 30 or 60 second per-turn timer to stop the over-thinkers. Panic clues are funnier and leak more information.

Two-clue rounds

House rule: go around the circle twice before voting. Round one is honest, round two is where the accusations start, and the imposter has to survive both.

Imposter FAQ

How many players do you need for Imposter?

Three at minimum, though five to eight is the sweet spot. Below five, the imposter has very few people to hide behind; above ten, add a second imposter so the odds stay interesting.

Does the imposter know they are the imposter?

It depends on the mode. In Classic mode they are told outright. In Undercover mode they receive a similar-looking decoy word, so they often do not realise anything is wrong until the clues stop matching.

What happens if the vote is tied?

A tie forces an immediate revote between the tied players only. Nobody is eliminated on a tie.

Can the imposter still win after being caught?

Yes. A caught imposter gets one guess at the secret word from six options. Guessing correctly steals the round — the imposter scores and the civilians get nothing.

Do the imposters know each other when there is more than one?

Not by default, which is what makes multi-imposter rounds so chaotic. You can enable Allies in Classic mode so they see each other, if you would rather they conspire than collide.

Is Imposter the same as Spyfall or Among Us?

It shares the hidden-role DNA. Spyfall hides a location and runs on questions; Among Us adds tasks and a map. Imposter strips it to one word and one clue each, which makes rounds much shorter — usually two or three minutes.

Do I need to download an app?

No. It runs in your phone browser, works after the first load even with no signal, and needs no account.
